a lesson learned
one fine Saturday afternoon, i went with a friend to British Museum. I am not a good fan of archaeological stuffs, or cultural heritage of ancient society. but im an art fanatic, but all i could do is drool over those scaled artworks that were produced by ancient masters.
we went to different sections, from Babylonians, to Persians, to Greek and Asian. what caught our attention most is the Asian sector, we saw some relics and cultural heritage from Korea, China, and some Japanese influenced things. and then my friend began to blurt… "Ano nga ba nacontribute ng Pinas sa mundo? What are the Filipinos known for?"
her face was smiling, but i could not help but think. what are the Filipinos good for.
I have been abroad for quite sometime now, and i have rode the double decker bus, got stuck in the tube, rode the coach going to the country side, and on these trips i have came acrossed many Filipinos with different stories, different experiences but with the common thought - PHILIPPINES IS SINKING.
then it hit me, Jose Rizal traveled to Europe and proved the worth of an INDIO, it was documented that he was one of the best among his foreign colleagues. Other Illustrados such as Del Pilar, Juan Luna and Felix Resurrecion Hidalgo were well known all over Europe for their fields. But how come all their heritage were forgotten?
Remember Carlos P. Romulo? He is known worldwide for his service in the UNITED NATIONS. Are we proud of him? You bet I am, we are known for our hard work and keen ability to compete and be the best.
It pains me that we are branded, as second rate citizens, a brown race to become domestic helpers, carers, nurses - we are more than that. What the hell happened to the once great nation Philippines.
Let us go back in History, we once had the exchange rate of $1=P2 and this was just after the war. Do you remember the time that the Philippine was the center of the agriculture in Asia. Experts from Japan, Indonesia and neighboring Asian countries consulted from our experts. and our main specialty was rice.
we also topped some sporting events like basketball, track and field, chess and bowling. we also had world champions in boxing and billiards way back then. Our educational system was one of the best, and we were always up to date with technology. and what happened?
the rise of imperialist bureaucratic capitalist gobbled us alive. although it was evident that it was our own apathy that created the down fall. when we chose to close our eyes and ear over all the changes that occurred during the rise of nepotism and private armies, we were all subjected to fascist regime.
Although records will show that some people braved out the wave of the great martial Rule in 72, it also showed that many died for being brave. but why did it become so unsuccessful? There was no united stand of point of views, while some would brand the Marcos Regime, others praised them.
In medical terms we always believe that prevention is better than cure. but did we ever learn from history? lets fast track things, what happened in Aquino’s time?
Democracy? Mendiola ? the CARP? Amnesty for the NPA ? Debts on the IMF? Try to figure these things out, you and me still carry the same things from the older generation.
Ramos era? FVR is the man…NOT. Philippines 2000? its now 2006 and the program never happened. Our country was like a lamb thrown over the den of Lions by signing the WTO-GATT authored by the Economist SEN. GLORIA ARROYO. we were prematurely placed on a field we were not ready yet. Globalization during the time of Ramos was not for us. We were struggling that time(and still we are), importing goods TAX free would bury us alive. Fair trade was a bullshit thing. The G7 were just finding ways to get their market share to grow bigger.
It was also in the Ramos era that the said oil deregulation act was signed. hmm, if your looking for a job now, and your only signed as a contractual employee, give thanks to this regime.
after Ramos, we needed a hero. a mass based hero that would answer to the call of the majority, and there he was. ERAP. The Asiong Salongga, the great hero who always was on time to beat the bad guys in the movies.
but because he could not keep himself sober, his so-called midnight cabinet brought him down. A number of Social Elites and Social Democrats wanted him out so they went with the National Democrats call for his resignation. and he bid the palace goodbye. and there goes Erap.
it was media sensation.
so whats Next…Gloria rocked the boat… the paper boat. May 1 rally? i could not forget that event. so many things to say about Gloria’s regime but I am sick of repeating things… I tend to learn from history. another election passed.. and there is our lying president with her famous line "I will not run"…and look where she is now.
the question remains, "May nagbago ba?"
so whats the conclusion…
the Filipinos can still make it. and we suffered enough. do you think its about time to keep things back to its proper order. we are not a slave of any Foreign country, and we are not copy cats of Western Society, and HELL NO WILL WE BECOME SECOND RATE BROWN RACED CITIZEN. we are more than that.
on my bus rides, and tube rides, Filipinos I come across don’t recognize that i am a Filipino. But on several occasions when some strangers I meet ask…"HEY MATE, Where You From?, Are you a Chinese or Korean?"
id simply smile and say, "I’m better than them, I am a Filipino, from Philippines"…
and they would always say(90% of the time) "Ohh, How is the collection of Imelda’s shoes?"
